Trading in a World on Edge — A Briefing for London Businesses Presented by International Trade Matters

Global conflict is no longer something that happens elsewhere. It is reshaping the cost of energy, the reliability of supply chains, the price of food commodities and the complexity of trade compliance - and it is doing so in ways that touch businesses of every size and sector, including those right here in London.

This two-hour briefing, delivered by International Trade Matters, maps the eight most significant active conflict zones and high-tension areas in the world today, and traces the downstream effects across five critical sectors: trade and shipping, food and agriculture, energy, technology supply chains, and humanitarian systems.

It then examines the less visible but equally significant rise of non-tariff barriers - sanctions regimes, export controls, rules of origin changes and carbon border adjustments - that are adding a new layer of complexity to international trading relationships. The session is designed specifically for London businesses. It draws direct connections between global events and local exposure - and in London, that exposure runs deep.

Overview

The city is the world's leading centre for trade finance, marine insurance and international legal services: the institutions that exist to manage global trade risk are concentrated here, and the disruptions reshaping that risk affect them directly.

London's technology sector, the largest in Europe with over half a million employed, faces the compliance implications of US-China technology decoupling and data localisation requirements multiplying across contested geographies. The Port of London at Tilbury, handling tens of millions of tonnes of cargo annually, sits downstream of every Red Sea rerouting decision and every shift in global shipping costs. And London's professional and financial services firms — from the Lloyd's market to the City's law firms and accountancy practices - are navigating a sanctions landscape that has expanded faster in the past three years than in the previous three decades.

Attendees will leave with a clearer picture of the risks facing their business, a framework for assessing their own exposure, and four practical actions they can take immediately. There will be dedicated time for questions and open discussion.

The session is led by International Trade Matters, specialists in helping businesses navigate the complexity of global trade — from market access and supply chain strategy to sanctions compliance and regulatory change.
