Richard Burge, Chief Executive of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), said:
“Following the announcement from the Conservative Party of the final two candidates in its leadership contest, the London Chamber calls on Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss to recognise the importance of an effective relationship between Government and business and commit to a reset that will put the UK on the path to growth. This relationship is built on trust, stability and a mutual understanding of what is beneficial to our country, but it has suffered tremendously in the current economic crisis and the final Brexit arrangement. Businesses are at a crucial juncture and we need a relationship reset to kick start business recovery and accelerate the UK’s productivity growth. We urge the candidates to commit to improving ties between business and Government, and in particular between Government and London’s businesses community. London has a central role to play as the engine room of the UK’s economy. The next Prime Minister will need London firing on all cylinders to deliver on their future domestic and international agenda, whatever that might be. We hope a reset relationship will deliver new investment in skills, commitment to sustainable infrastructure, and a reduction in trading red-tape to ensure long-term growth and greater opportunity in London and across the whole of the UK.”
