LCCI react to new measures to support Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Thursday 25 April 2024

James Watkins, Head of Policy and Public Impact at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said: “We welcome the Government’s announcement of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate for the UK, which aims to secure 10% of all jet fuel from sustainable sources by 2030. London’s economic success has always relied on its global connectivity, and its aviation sector is a key facilitator of trade and investment flows which spread jobs and opportunity around the country.

“LCCI’s Green Skies report called for greater expansion of SAF production in the UK, and for passengers to be protected from higher travel prices throughout this process. We are pleased to see the Government’s mandate will allow the aviation sector to ramp up SAF production whilst ensuring travel remains accessible. We are also pleased to see the announcement of a consultation on a revenue certainty scheme for SAF, as this was the key recommendation from our Green Skies report; we will work with the government in partnership with LCCI’s aviation members to ensure this scheme facilitates investment into SAF.

“This announcement reflects the UK’s global leadership in driving action on climate. London sits at the heart of this effort, as a centre for green finance and home to an innovative technology ecosystem which is helping to generate new climate solutions and drive sustainable growth. We are pleased to see the government putting its weight behind the aviation sector by incentivising production and reducing the cost of SAF, which in the long run will accelerate the vital transition to a greener future.”
