Free AI Training from the UK Government: What London Businesses Need to Know

The Government has announced free AI training for every adult in the UK, marking a step forward in its AI Action Plan, published a year ago. This new initiative aims to equip 10 million workers with essential AI skills by 2030, helping businesses of all sizes utilise artificial intelligence with confidence.

For London businesses, this announcement presents a valuable opportunity to upskill teams, improve productivity, and remain competitive in an increasingly AI‑driven economy.

Free AI Training for Every Adult in the UK

Under the new programme, every adult in the UK is eligible to access free, newly benchmarked AI training courses designed to build practical, workplace‑ready skills. The courses are suitable for people at all career stages and across sectors, helping demystify AI and show how it can be applied safely and effectively at work.

This training is being delivered in partnership with a range of trusted organisations, ensuring the content reflects real‑world business and public‑sector needs.

Supporting Britain’s AI Ambitions

The initiative forms part of the Government’s broader plan to make Britain the fastest‑adopting AI nation in the Group of Seven (G7) - an intergovernmental political and economic forum made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

By accelerating AI adoption, the Government hopes to boost productivity, innovation, and long‑term economic growth, while ensuring UK workers and employers are equipped with the right skills to use AI responsibly.

The AI Skills Hub

UK workers are now able to access the AI Skills Hub, which brings together a wide range of learning resources in one place. These resources are designed to be practical and accessible, helping learners understand how AI tools can be used in everyday work settings, and setting standards for what good AI upskilling looks like. It also provides dedicated support for SMEs.

On completion of the courses, learners will receive a virtual AI Foundations badge, providing a recognised credential that demonstrates a baseline level of AI capability.

Building Confidence for Workers and Employers

One of the key aims of the programme is to give both workers and employers confidence in using AI. The training focuses not just on tools, but on responsible use, ethical considerations, and practical application within existing roles.

By setting national benchmarks for AI skills, the initiative helps organisations understand how to integrate AI into their operations while supporting staff through the transition.

Reaching 10 Million Workers – Including SMEs

Training 10 million workers by the end of the decade is equivalent to upskilling nearly one-third of the UK workforce. Crucially, the programme aims to reach 2 million employees in small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs).

For SMEs, which often lack the time or resources to invest in bespoke training, free AI upskilling removes a significant barrier and opens the door to improved efficiency, innovation and competitiveness.

Preparing for the Future of Work

Recognising that AI will bring lasting changes to jobs and working practices, the Government has also announced the creation of a new AI and the Future of Work Unit. Launched by the Tech Secretary, this unit will focus on staying ahead of the challenges and opportunities AI presents, helping policymakers and businesses adapt as technology evolves.

Why This Matters for UK Businesses

Recent research highlights a significant AI skills gap across the UK’s business environment:

  • Only 21% of UK workers currently feel confident using AI at work
  • Just one in six businesses are using AI today

The most common barriers to adoption include:

  • Lack of identified business need
  • Limited AI skills and expertise
  • Ethical concerns
  • High costs
  • Unclear or uncertain regulation

Free, government‑backed AI training will help address these challenges by improving skills, building confidence, and clarifying best practices.
