London Chamber hits out at decision to halt plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street.

Friday 8 June 2018

Commenting on the news that Westminster Council has decided to take plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street “off the table for good” the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry has spoken out against the move.

Sean McKee, Policy director at LCCI, said: “Halting the plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street is a short-sighted measure.

“The area is already congested and given rapid population expansion and the imminent arrival of the Elizabeth Line, we need to consider innovative ways to address this congestion and transform Oxford Street into a world-class place to live, work and visit.

“Most local businesses across London support the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street, but it must be done right with measures put in place to support local businesses who might be adversely affected.

“Of course there will be local people opposed to the plans but the area is important to London’s economy and the safety, comfort and ease of travel for tourists, shoppers, and workers but be full considered.”
