Richard Burge, Chief Executive of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said: “The confidence of London businesses has been severely damaged over recent days by the collapse of the pound against the dollar and we were pleased to hear Sir Keir Starmer express a commitment to macro-economic stability in his speech at the Labour Party Conference earlier today. A degree of certainty in a deeply uncertain geopolitical climate is vital to encouraging business growth and investment, and this is something we expect to see from the Government.
“We welcome the Labour leader’s commitment to a Green New Deal, and LCCI has consistently supported the Mayor of London to meet GLA’s net zero target by 2030, but more detail is required to enact a practical plan for tackling green skills gaps across London and enabling the transition to renewable energy for businesses. Likewise, the intention to set up Great British Energy is admirable, but if Labour are to win the trust and support of London businesses then this is an idea that must be based on workable solutions. Moreover, the Labour Party must commit to providing a long-term solution to funding Transport for London (TfL) to enable businesses, visitors and tourists to feel confident in using London’s transport network.”
