LCCI Calls for London to Play Central Role in UK Olympic and Paralympic Bid

Tuesday 19 May 2026

Karim Fatehi OBE, CEO of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), said:

"The London Chamber of Commerce and Industry is calling for London to play a central role in any future UK Olympic and Paralympic Games bid, and today we have written to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, to make that view clear.

The London 2012 games were one of the proudest moments in our city and our country’s history, delivering substantial economic, infrastructure and skills benefits for London and the wider UK, while inspiring a new generation of British athletes and uniting communities across the country.

London has a unique advantage in any future bid. The world-class facilities built for the 2012 games remain operational and continue to serve local communities, businesses and elite sport. Making use of these existing assets and experience of organising large-scale events would significantly reduce the cost of hosting the games, strengthen the competitiveness of any UK bid and support a more environmentally sustainable approach. Furthermore, given the importance of London to the UK’s economy, hosting the games in the capital would generate significant additional tax receipts for the Exchequer, benefiting public services across the country.

LCCI also believes there is a major opportunity to host future games across multiple UK cities, with London as the hub due to the infrastructure already being in place. This would reduce costs and enable more investment to be directed into other cities and regions across the UK, helping to spread the economic benefits more widely and creating a lasting national legacy, while strengthening the UK’s bid with the International Olympic Committee.

We welcome the Government’s decision to commission UK Sport to undertake an initial strategic assessment, and following which we urge for a review of all UK cities and venues which could practically host either part, or all, of the games, evaluating a shortlist against the criteria most likely to maximise the UK's chances of being selected to host by the IOC. We look forward to engaging constructively as the process develops."
